Once upon a time my wife asked me to decorate the house for Christmas.......
Now, ask any 5 year old to describe the house...
We're the house with a Bazillion lights.
That's how it all started. In 1996 we moved into our house in Livonia, Michigan, and we decided to decorate it with lights and decorations. For the first few years it was kept simple trying different colors and decorations. Purple lights were even used one year. Unfortunately they looked pink when powered up. Different areas of the house were decorated each year, gradually adding each year. In 2004 new heights were reached when lights to the maple tree in the easement. The tree is 63'-64'tall. Twelve window hung flat snowflake decorations were put randomly throughout the tree. The highest being about 50' off the ground. The bottom 12 feet branches and trunk were wrapped with white lights. In 2004 18,000 lights and a 13' tall blowup Santa Clause to go with the 8' high Frosty the Snowman was added. For 2005 7,000 more lights were lit up. We added the lights to the front of the house and the bushes. In 2005 the front of the garage including the basketball net got some lights. The truck almost got wrapped in lights as well, but it got spared at the last minute. The house now had a "Grizwald/Lampoon" quantity of lights. Channel 4 news stopped by to take some video of the house for the 11:00 news. The big plunge was taken in 2006. Control was used. 64 Channels of Light O Rama control. Four blow molds and two light up animated deer from garage sales were also added. Channel 4 News showed up again and shot video for about 45 minutes which ended up being a 15 second spot. For 2007 We Had 33,600 lights(more than Clark Grizwald), A snowball fight animation with our neighbor over the street, strobe lights, a new flying Santa mechanism, a leaping fence, and 32 more channels of Light O Rama. For 2008 We have a little over 40,000 in our little display, 96 more channels of Light O Rama. This will bring our total to 192 channels of control. The megatree is now 4 colors. All the bushes are red, green and white this year. There are also 32 mini trees sequenced to the music. There are even more songs this year. There are 14 programmed to 192 channels.
Here's a link to a map of Displays we've visited or seen on the web. They're all located in Michigan. Michigan Displays Map. This list is constantly being updated and refined. Check back often!
I'm having some issues with my power distribution to my house, believe it or not.
I added a new Circuit breaker panel and I feel that I need my own transformer or a larger drop to my house. I have had linesman from Detroit Edison to my house twice and they say my drop is adequate. I have a hard time believing that when my voltage is dropping inside the house. If any one from Detroit Edison engineering dept. reads this, please sent me an Email:) I'd love to talk with you!!!!
Special Thank you to Ben Catterall the "Cutout" extrordinaire of Superior Controls. He saved me a few hours of labor, making one of my controller boxes this year. What would have taken me about 4 hours took him about 52 minutes!! What A guy!!!
